Casa de Amor started life as Tacos Mexican Restaurant — one of Hobart's earliest Mexican dining experiences. Over nearly five decades the name changed, the menu evolved, and the room moved from Battery Point to the Silos to Morrison St. What hasn't changed: the warmth, the margaritas, and the reason people keep coming back.
Roland Mikusz and his wife Debbie started Tacos Mexican Restaurant — originally a Taco Bills franchise, until Roland broke away and simply called it Tacos. It opened on Hampden Road in Battery Point, where Magic Curries now stands, and quickly built a loyal following for its authentic Mexican food and frozen margaritas.
After many successful years Roland and Debbie were ready for a change and sold the business to the Flanagan family. Their daughter Susie, fresh from Drysdale House, brought new energy — expanding the margarita flavours in a way that proved enormously popular. Sisters Kelly and Ally worked alongside her, making margarita mixes and keeping the kitchen humming.
The business kept growing until Battery Point couldn't contain it anymore. The restaurant moved to the Silos building, a much larger space that could finally match the demand. After Susie stepped back, her sister Kelly and Kelly's husband Chris ran the restaurant until it was eventually sold.
When an opportunity opened up on Morrison Street, Susie came back. With Graham handling the books, Donna as chief avocado buyer, Chris back in the kitchen, and Alex — there from the original days — holding the recipes, the team picked up exactly where they'd left off. Old regulars came back, pleased to find the food and margaritas hadn't changed.
After steering the restaurant through Covid, the Flanagan family decided it was time to hand the reins over. Kranthi took ownership in 2022, bringing fresh vision while keeping the soul of the place intact — the same recipes, the same margaritas, and the same room that Hobart has loved for nearly five decades.
Set in one of Hobart's most distinctive heritage buildings, Casa de Amor is a venue that adds something to the night before the food even arrives. High ceilings, warm light, and a room that knows how to hold a crowd.
